Block Retaining Walls Around Above-Ground Pools, Portsmouth
An above-ground pool needs level ground, and a lot of yards around Portsmouth do not have any. The fix is a retaining wall that holds the grade back and gives you a flat pad to set the pool on. Both of these walls sit on a compacted gravel base with drainage stone behind them, so water moves out instead of pushing on the block. One is a straight run in grey block, the other wraps the pool in a curve using tumbled block. Same idea either way: hold the hill, get a level pool and a yard you can walk on.
Curved Retaining Wall and Stone Beds, Wheelersburg
A long sweeping curve is harder to build than a straight run, because every course has to stay tight through the radius. We laid this wall in tumbled block to soften the look, then finished the front with stone beds and evergreens planted along the top. Low maintenance for the homeowner, and it holds the grade along the whole side of the house.

This one is a full outdoor living build. Large format pavers on a compacted base for the patio, a lit water feature set into the edge of it, and black river rock beds with a clean border tying the whole thing back into the house. The homeowners wanted a clean path from the covered porch out to the pool without walking through wet grass. We ran a paver walkway the length of the porch and out into the yard, with the pavers cut in tight to the posts and the edge restrained so nothing shifts over the winter.
Block Wall Holding a Yard Above the Street, Portsmouth
This lot dropped off toward the road, which meant the usable yard was slowly walking downhill. We built a tall block wall along the low side to lock the grade in place, kept every course level across the run, and backfilled behind it with stone so water has somewhere to go. The photo was taken while the ground below was still being finished, but the wall itself is done and holding.
